Why do we use filled PTFE?

Virgin PTFE is highly flexible as well as extremely dense. As a result, PTFE can creep and deform under heavy loads. This potential disadvantage can be obviated by adding a filler in order to benefit from the properties of both materials. Fillers can also add properties such as improved thermal conductivity, for applications that demand good heat dissipation.

What filler can be added to PTFE?

The use of standard fillers (like carbon, glass fibre, and bronze) or special fillers allow engineers to make specific changes to PTFE's material properties. 

Many of the characteristics of PTFE can be enhanced with the addition of fillers. Orientfluoro could helps customers to choose the right grade for your application.

    Material Characteristics

    Polyimide-filled PTFE compounds have about the lowest friction properties of all filled PTFE materials, so they provide great performance in non-lubricated (dry) applications. It has very low abrasion to dynamic mating surfaces. Polyimide filled PTFE suits dry running and stop-start applications particularly well.

    Material Characteristics

    Ekonol is a very thermally stable polymer. When combined with PTFE, it produces composite material s that have excellent temperature and wear resistance. The Ekonol filled PTFE blend are compatible with a wide range of mating surfaces. As the content of Ekonol increases, the wear resistance of the composite material is several dozen times higher than that of virgin PTFE.

    Material Characteristics

    The ceramic filled PTFE has low heat conductivity and chemical inertia of the alloyed metal. It has outstanding tribological friction and wear characteristics compared to the glass filled PTFE, with reduced permeation producing less abrasive wear.

    Carbon fibre lowers creep, increases flexural and compressive modulus and raises hardness. Thermal expansion is lower and electrical conductivity is higher. Good for strong bases and hydrofluoric acids. Excellent wear behaviour in aquaeous environment.

    Carbon/graphite filled PTFE materials have better wear resistance than carbon filled PTFE materials. Carbon/graphite filled PTFE materials have excellent extrusion resistance and good wear resistance and will work well in both lubricated and non-lubricated environments. Carbon/graphite filled PTFE materials are used in static and dynamic applications and used against chromium-plated surface and steel.

    One of the best known dry lubricants, MoS2 can increase surface hardness and lower coefficient of friction and wear rate while the glass fibers add structural reinforcement. This compound is very commonly used for reciprocating seals in hydraulic and pnematic cylinders.

    Carbon reduces creep, increases hardness, and elevates the thermal conductivity of parts. Carbon-filled PTFE materials have some electrical conductivity. Wear resistance can be improved by adding graphite.

    Stainless steel is the other metallic PTFE filler choice when extremely wear resistance to high temperatures is required. Stainless steel is added in in high amounts, usually 50% in weight, which is equivalent to 15% in volume, to improve the thermal conductivity and reduce the deformation under load when Stainless steel-filled PTFE materials are subjected to load at extreme temperatures. Stainless steel-filled PTFE materials have very good abrasion resistance and compressive strength. Stainless steel-filled PTFE materials are typically used for seats and seals that required high heat and steam applications.

    Material Characteristics

    Bronze filled PTFE provides a better creep resistance than most of the filled PTFE blend. It exhibits improved thermal conductivity, with high load bearing capacity and hence is most often used in hydraulic systems. Bronze filled PTFE is both thermally and electrically conductive. The bronze enhances dimensional stability due to improved hardness, compressive strength and resistance to creep.
